Something Lighter: A Definition of "Psychotherapy"

… Professionals of various licensures and at various stages of the development of their profession have fought for the right to practice “psychotherapy,” to advertise the fact of such practice, and to refer to themselves as “psychotherapists.” What is the definition of “psychotherapy?” There are many, some of which are in statute and are quite broad. One lawyer, who argued against the need for state licensure of psychotherapists, defined “psychotherapy” (tongue in cheek, I trust!) as “an unidentified technique, applied to unspecified circumstances, with unpredictable outcomes – requiring rigorous training.”
